Revaluing pre-inca cultural heritage

What is it about?

The archaeological park of Pikillaqta is located 32.00 kilometers south of the city of Cusco, in the province of Quispicanchi, the monument recognized as cultural heritage of the nation with Directorial Resolution No. 396 of 2002.

It is accessed by the Cusco – Arequipa asphalted road, it has an extraordinary cultural value, it is also located within a RAMSAR area, Huacarpay lagoon, around a succession of pre-Inka and Inka cultures flourished, the most representative being the Archaeological Complex of Pikillaqta, Choquepujyo, Rumicolca, Cañaraqay, Puete Inka de Yunkapunku, Combayoq, among others; Pikillaqta is considered to be the best planned pre-Inka city in the Peruvian territory belonging to the Wari culture, while satellite sites such as Choquepujyo and Rumiqolqa are important for the emergence of the Inka city of Cusco, mainly because of the largest andesite quarry for the construction of the city of Cusco.

The proposed activities will mainly take place in Choquepujyo, Rumicolca, Cañaraqay, Arco de Rumiqolqa, Puente inka Yuncapuncu, which connected Cusco with the ancient Antisuyu with the jungles of Paucartambo, a territory where sacred coca was cultivated.

The ceramics and architecture workshops will take place in the Tempóralpampa sector, near the archaeological site of Choquepujyo in the archaeological park of Pikillaqta.

Pikillaqta, a territory that is currently considered a RAMSAR zone, has different archaeological sites, the scope of our activities, this area where it is very evident to appreciate architecture from two clear eras of our history, in addition to being the head of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, it is in this natural and cultural space, where the volunteer will develop his various activities.

This is also a package of activities designed for 01 week of stay in the heart of the Wari Empire, involving several locations.

The camp in the Temporalpampa sector, while the activities will be carried out mainly in the archaeological sites of Choquepujyo and Rumiqolqa.

  • To revalue cultural heritage.
  • To transmit the construction technology of platforms to future generations for the sustainable development of the populations.
  • Motivate the Valuation and consequently the protection of the archaeological site
  • Promote sustainable tourism practices, minimizing environmental impact and promoting the conservation of the environment.
  • Involving the local population in the process of revaluation of their heritage, strengthens the sense of identity, belonging and pride.
  • Motivating responsible tourism can boost services and create job opportunities in the local community.

30-day stay (4 weeks of work):

  • Week 1: Detailed knowledge of the area and practical induction
  • Weeks 2-4: Direct work under the direction of your monitor and in accordance with established protocols to achieve project objectives and final report.
  • Professional supervision and follow-up of the volunteer by an Archaeologist.
  • The volunteer will carry out a monitoring program to evaluate the state of conservation of the site and detect possible ones. Threats. such as erosion, pollution or the presence of illegal activities.
  • Avoid activities that may damage the site, such as eating food, playing sports, or making campfires
  • The volunteer will have to apply factors of social empathy with the local community.

  • Basic level of Spanish (A2) recommended.
  • Compulsory international health insurance.
  • Camp: shared or single rooms depending on availability
  • Full meals (3 meals a day with local products)
  • Induction and welcome by the technical and cultural team
  • Maintenance and conservation work at archaeological sites.
  • Hikes to satellite archaeological sites of the Pikillaqta Archaeological Park.
  • Workshops and training on ceramics and architecture.
  • Continuous monitoring and flexible schedules
  • Weekend activity suggestions:
    • Visit to the temples of Andahuaylillas, Huaro, Canincunca.
    • Tasting of milk ice creams and derivatives, as well as typical dishes of baked duck, trout-based dishes in Lucre.
